Our namesake theatre, the Capri Adult Theatre in Daytona Beach, FL. The Capri started life way back in 1929 as a neighborhood theater, then called the Kingston Theater (that was what that part of Daytona was then known as). It was renamed the Ridgewood in 1949 (it’s on Ridgewood Ave), and finally the Capri in 1965 when the Oliver family took over. It had already been toying with more adult, or “art house”, fare, but when they switched to the Capri name they made a very firm commitment to smut. They were on the forefront of fighting censorship throughout the 70s and 80s (the first picture is from 1982, and they were still showing DEEP THROAT! and the second is from 1975). It was forced to transition to video projection in the mid-80s, which we believe was a loophole in a legal settlement that barred them from projecting adult ššššš , but didn’t explicitly say they couldn’t project adult š£ššššš ! It finally shuttered in the early 90s, and by 1995 the building had been demolished. The lot is still vacant 29 years later. There’s a lot more to the Capri story, which we’ll get around to telling some day.
